Reports of child abuse are constantly in the news. In order to have stable and nurturing families, we must take care of our smallest citizens. For this reason, the Spartanburg Community Indicators Project chose to co-host "A Brighter Future" conference as our Epic Event this year. The conference will help us as a community learn more about this problem and how we as a community should respond. Registration is in full swing. Click the logo to register today!
According to the Children’s Defense Fund (2008), in South Carolina a child is abused or neglected every 49 minutes. There were 392 substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect in Spartanburg County in 2007. In the substantiated Spartanburg cases, 663 children were victims (11,604 statewide), constituting 1.0% of children in the county. In 2003, Spartanburg County reported the highest number of indicated cases of child abuse in South Carolina. The surrounding counties in the Upstate have similar statistics.
