Indicator Progress

Spartanburg residents now can text tips to police through an anonymous text message program geared toward young people scared to give police information on crime in the community.  Text-a-tip, announced Thursday morning, is already up and running and one of only a few similar programs in the nation, Spartanburg Public Safety Director Tony Fisher said. The message is routed through an out-of-state company, which "cleans" the message of the identifying phone number before sending it on to police, who can then text back, he said.

Text-a-tip

-- To text-a-tip to Spartanburg police, text “TIP649” and your tip in the body of the message and send it to CRIMES (274637).

-- All messages are anonymous, and the “TIP” number lets a third-party company know to which law enforcement agency to send the top.

-- You will be notified immediately that your message has been received and forwarded to Spartanburg police, who will respond to you as soon as possible through texting.

-- To end the text messaging session, enter the word “Stop” on your phone and hit send.

For emergencies, always dial 911.
