Solid Waste / Recycling
|
Reducing solid waste disposal in landfills decreases the need for new landfills
or incineration. Much of the growing volume of garbage is from the use of disposable
consumer products and excess packaging. A material doesn't become waste until
it is put in the landfill or incinerated. If a material can be reused or recycled,
it is not waste. Americans generate trash at a rate of four pounds per day per
person, which is almost twice as much trash per person as most other major countries.
