Dr. Belal Hossain

Director of Research and Evaluation

Dr. Belal Hossain serves as the Director of Research and Evaluation at Strategic Spartanburg, where he leads data-driven initiatives to inform policy and improve quality of life across Spartanburg County. His work focuses on housing, poverty and upward mobility, food security, and youth mental health. He is currently leading the development of the State of Housing report for the City of Spartanburg, supporting data-driven and evidence-based local planning and cross-sector decision-making. Trained as a sociologist, Dr. Hossain brings expertise in statistical and GIS analysis, program evaluation, and policy research.  

He previously worked at the Center for Insecurity and Inequality Research at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Hossain holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Oklahoma State University. He has published his work in prestigious journals, including the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, Environmental Science & Policy, Hydrological Sciences Journal, Sociology of Development, and Journal of World-Systems Research.  

In addition to his professional and academic endeavors, he is deeply committed to community engagement and sustainable development. His previous role as UNEP TUNZA National Youth Advisor for Bangladesh underscores his dedication to environmental advocacy and youth participation in sustainability initiatives. Now residing in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with his wife and baby boy, he enjoys walking, gardening, and connecting with nature, while maintaining close ties with his family in Bangladesh and valuing community both locally and globally.
